Roberto Burle Marx - KLCC Park

An influential and ground-breaking landscape architect, KLCC Park is supposedly the final piece designed by Roberto Burle Marx. Providing greenery to the space around the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, he designed the area to ‘leave the world a little more sensitive and a little more educated to the importance of nature.’ The genius of this design in my opinion is the juxtaposition of the site in the first place. The Petronas Towers, for a period the largest buildings in the world, and surrounded by skyscrapers for miles, could very easily have been filled in with built form and more office blocks and facilities. Instead this creates an area of tranquillity and peace in the financial and business centre of one of the busiest cities on the planet. The KLCC Park is a perfect example of ‘the workers’ escape’, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy and interact with nature, water (through the wading pool) and wildlife during their down time .

Having started the academic year with no previous experience of using Photoshop, InDesign or AutoCAD, I'm genuinely really proud of the work below, and pleased to share how far my skills have progressed in such a short period of time. Starting with an initial DigiMap of the site with some existing contours, I have created a Topography, Vegetation and Hydrology Strategy for amendments to the area, to try and create something which the public and wildlife can engage with, and an area which can be an educational and biodiverse asset to Gloucester and the surrounding area. By redesigning the retention ponds and making them a focal point of the vegetation as well as the hydrology, I feel that I have managed to create a far more visually stimulating site that what currently exists. due to only planting native species in the plan, biodiversity and ecological balance has been maintained. I'll admit to it being a little rough around the edges in places, and perhaps some details missing

Topher Delaney - Healing Spaces

Topher Delaney – Healing Spaces Topher Delaney is particularly interesting, because her inspiration for much of her work was her own illness. When first asked to design the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Centre healing garden, her work was instantly disparaged by management who decided her design was too colourful and cheery for use of patients with often terminal cancers. Only when she revealed she was a cancer patient at the time, did her plans gain traction in this case. Further reading on healing spaces has been particularly interesting, especially Delaney’s explanation of the user needing a sense of ‘protection’ in a healing garden, which is not something which can be easily designed. understanding specific amendments required for access, weakened immune systems, shelter from cold and wind, as well as understanding that the users of a healing garden and the commissioners who pay for it are diametrically opposite groups, shows how landscape and design can be highly politic
