Roberto Burle Marx - KLCC Park

An influential and ground-breaking landscape architect, KLCC Park is supposedly the final piece designed by Roberto Burle Marx. Providing greenery to the space around the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, he designed the area to ‘leave the world a little more sensitive and a little more educated to the importance of nature.’

The genius of this design in my opinion is the juxtaposition of the site in the first place. The Petronas Towers, for a period the largest buildings in the world, and surrounded by skyscrapers for miles, could very easily have been filled in with built form and more office blocks and facilities. Instead this creates an area of tranquillity and peace in the financial and business centre of one of the busiest cities on the planet.

The KLCC Park is a perfect example of ‘the workers’ escape’, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy and interact with nature, water (through the wading pool) and wildlife during their down time.
